The problem of selfishness has been around as long as people have walked the earth. Satan would not have been able to tempt Eve were it not for her selfish desires. She wanted to taste of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil even though God said she couldn’t. Eve’s selfish nature told her she was cheating herself. She wanted more knowledge for herself, and her selfishness led to her fall. She had a son named Cain who also sinned because he was selfish. God wouldn’t accept his sacrifice. That hurt his pride. He wanted God’s approval but instead Abel got the approval, so he killed Abel. David was a selfless other-centered king most of the time, but he had a bout of selfishness. He wanted another man’s wife even though he already had too many of his own and killed Uriah so he could marry Bathsheba. If you have a problem with selfishness you’re not alone. Ask yourself this though: Has anything good happened in your life because you were selfish? Selfishness alienates you. Nobody likes to be around selfish people. It ruins relationships. Selfishness is the number 1 cause of divorce. That’s why the Bible says, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;” Philippians 2:3. Even good things are done sometimes with selfish motives. “Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; … the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives,” Philippians 1:15,17. Preaching and other religious services can be done because of selfish ambition. We need to be on guard against having the wrong motives for doing what we do in the name of Christ. For you to receive a blessing from your acts of service, you need to do those acts with selflessness. “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.” Say no to self and yes to Christ. Be like Him.
