“How are you?” “Fine.” That used to be the common response to the question “How are you?”. Now the most common response is “Tired.” Everybody is tired. Why are we so tired? When I was in high school teachers told us that by the time we were adults, computers would be doing everything for us, and we would have more free time. While computers don’t do EVERYTHING for us, there are modern innovations which make life easier. We should be less tired than people who had to raise their own food, write things by hand, do all their banking in person, make more wrong turns because they didn’t have Garmin/Google maps to help them, etc. Why are we tired? While it is true we have technological advantages, we are worse than prior generations at prioritizing our lives and managing our time. Moses spent every waking moment trying to guide the Israelites to follow God’s commandments in civil disputes, but when his father-in-law watched him, he told Moses, “The thing that you are doing is not good.” Exodus 18:17. Jethro told Moses, “… select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens. Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be that every major dispute they will bring to you, but every minor dispute they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.” Exodus 18:21-22. Moses was tired. He was wearing himself out because he was trying to do everything himself. We’re tired because we think we have to do everything ourselves. We have members of this congregation who do wonderful things, but have you ever stopped to think who is going to do what you do when you are gone? Follow Jethro’s advice. Find someone and teach them to do what you do.
