Would you consider yourself physically fit? Would you say you are in pretty good shape for your age? A friend of mine told me once, “I'm in shape. Round is a shape.” If you take good care of yourself physically, eat right, get proper exercise, control your weight, a healthy lifestyle makes a big difference in the way you handle daily challenges. Getting to your peak physical condition and staying that way gives you the opportunity to accomplish more. You sleep better, live a more productive life. The Bible encourages us to take good care of our bodies, the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Timothy 4 8 says, “For ‘physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come.’” [NET]. There are rich benefits from taking good care of yourself physically, but do you know what is even more beneficial? To take good care of yourself spiritually. Being physically fit helps in this life but being spiritually fit helps in this life as well as the life to come. So, how much spiritual exercise did you get this week? Did you exercise your faith? That means putting your faith into action; making decisions and acting upon those decisions based on what God wants you to do rather than what you feel like doing. Are you eating good spiritually? Do you take in a steady diet of God's Word every day or do you just snack on the scriptures here and there? You should be reading your Bible every day, but reading the Word doesn’t do any good unless you apply what you learn. It’s like reading diet and exercise books but never changing. What’s the point? You will be learning helpful things in Bible class and worship today, but what's the point if you never apply what you learn. Exercise your faith so you don't get spiritually flabby. Get off the couch and tone up those spiritual muscles.
