Who Is My Brother?

Is the kind man I see at work every day my brother in Christ? He says he is a Christian. Should I just take him at his word and leave it at that? How do I determine whether he is one whom I should be sharing the gospel with or one I should consider already in a saved condition? What about my friend who attends a denominational church? Is she one I should treat as a sister in Christ, or do I need to be a good steward of the gospel and share with her what the Word teaches about salvation? Is my un-baptized family member saved? Is my physical brother in Christ also my spiritual brother in Christ? If people say they are Christians and I believe they are not, am I being judgmental? Tell me there are not some tough, tough questions when it comes to determining who we are in fellowship with and who we are not. Because making a judgment about who we think is in also means we have determined in our minds who is out. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 7:21. I know a lot of people calling Jesus “Lord, Lord.” Jesus says that is no guarantee they have entered the kingdom of heaven. That bothers me. Deep down I want to believe many are saved and going to heaven, but what if they are not and have never received God’s grace? They are going to suffer eternally if they don’t have Christ. I could help prevent that, but what if I don’t because I assume they are already saved. This is hard. On Wednesday we are going to start a new class entitled Who is My Brother? based on a book by F. LaGard Smith with the same title. Come join us as we search the Bible for answers to some tough questions. We’ll also have the classes on YouTube for those who aren’t in our area.
