Don't Look Back

When do you get to the point in your faith where you are no longer in danger of falling away or backsliding? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you don’t know already that point will never occur in this life. No matter how strong your belief in and trust in God becomes, there is never a point where Satan gives up on tempting you with sinful or rebellious behavior. “Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.” 1 Corinthians 10:12. This verse warns us against thinking we are invincible. About the time you think your walk with God is so strong you can just coast on in from here, that you don’t need to learn anymore about the Bible, if you miss church a few times it’s no big deal; that is the point when you are in the prime position to take a hard fall. I’ve seen it happen. So have you. Hardly anyone was as close to God as David, the king of Isreal. David was admired not only for being a great warrior but for his unyielding devotion to God. Read his psalms. That man understood what it means to have the Lord as your Shepherd. Yet in the peak of his career, he lusted after a woman who was married to one of his own Mighty Men, 2 Samuel 23:8,39. He had sexual relations with her, tried to get her husband to cover up the sin by getting him drunk and when that didn’t work, had him killed. What in the world happened to this “man after God’s own heart?” It is hard to imagine a godly man like that doing such things. If you follow David’s life chronologically it almost sounds like 2 Samuel 12 is talking about a different man. If David can backslide to the point of adultery and murder, we all need to be humble and cautious. Keep your hand to the plow. Don’t look back.
