Born Again

If you have ever had aphids in your garden on your favorite vegetables or flowers you know how quickly they spread. Once they take hold, it is like a plague. According to Entomologist Stephen A. Marshall: in optimal environmental conditions and lacking any predators, parasites, or disease, a single aphid could produce 600 billion descendants in one season. Just how do these tiny sap suckers multiply so prolifically? Aphids are capable of Parthenogenesis. That’s a big word for asexual reproduction, they get pregnant without a mate. With few exceptions, aphids born in spring and summer are all females. These first wingless matriarchs spawn from embryos in early spring, equipped to reproduce without the need for male mates. Within a few weeks, these females produce more females, and soon after that, the third generation arrives. And so on, and so on. The aphid population expands exponentially without the need for a single male. Aphid mothers are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young, rather than laying eggs. Her offspring do not have to sit around waiting to hatch. Nor do they have to wait for reproductive maturity. Each aphid is born with a germinated seed inside of them. Their community expands rapidly because aphids are born pregnant. That’s right. Each aphid is born fully capable of immediately reproducing after themselves. This got me to thinking about how Christianity spread so quickly in the first century. Saul of Tarsus was baptized in Acts 9:18. Acts 9:20 says, “and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, ‘He is the Son of God.’” Saul was born again pregnant. We don’t have to wait until somebody trains us before we start reaching the lost. You were born again to show others how to be born again. God’s design is for each Christian to lead another to Christ and train them to do the same. “Entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2. Let’s do what we were designed to do.
