“Don’t Look Back.” This was the title of a top ten hit by Boston in 1978. “It's a new horizon and I'm awakin' now.
Oh I see myself in a brand new way. The sun is shinin'. The clouds are breakin'. Cause I can't lose now, there's no game to play.” Long before Don Scholz wrote those lyrics, Jesus said something about not looking back. He said, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:62. Jesus used the illustration of a plow to show how important it is not to look back. In His day, plows were pointed chunks of wood that were dragged through the ground by oxen or cattle. The farmer had to pay close attention to the plow. If the plow tipped down too far it would bury in the hard soil and the beasts would not be able to pull it. If it tipped up it would push out of the ground and would not do any good. The farmer not only had to watch the plow, he had to keep looking forward so his plow line would stay straight. He could not look back or to the side for even a second. In the same way, once we are baptized into Christ and become part of His kingdom we cannot look back to the old life. The past is gone. We are born again to live brand-new lives. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17. You are called to plow new ground. Keep your hand steady on the plow, not looking around to see if there is something else you would rather be doing; not looking back to see if there is something you want to return to. You can do it. Eyes forward. Your mind focused on the task at hand. Whatever you do, don’t look back.
