"Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down This Wall!" In a bold speech on June 12, 1987, Roald Reagan entreated Mikhail Gorbachev, head of the Soviet Union, to break through the 96-mile-long barrier separating East and West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was constructed after 3,500,000 people defected from East Germany, about 20% of their population. Walls can protect but they can also separate people from their loved ones and restrict freedom. The barriers which separate people can be a problem, but the worst barriers are the ones which separate us from God. Barriers like pride, addiction, selfishness, anger, depression and resentment keep us from escaping our harmful ways and breaking through to the Source of True Life. “Therefore remember that formerly you, the Gentiles in the flesh, who are called ‘Uncircumcision’ by the so-called ‘Circumcision,’ which is performed in the flesh by human hands—remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. ” Ephesians 2:11-13. What separates you from Christ? What keeps you from drawing close to God and having that peace and assurance that your sins are forgiven? If being right with God is what you seek, then “Tear Down This Wall!” The wall of Pride, the wall of Resentment, the wall of Addiction or Selfishness is going to stay there until you do something about it. What good does it do to come to church week after week and hear what you need to do to break through your barrier and then go right back to living the way you have always lived? Today could be the turning point in your life, when you finally take action and take control of your walk with God. Decide today that you want to put past you the barriers which hold you back.
