Mother's Day

A very happy Mother’s Day, to the women who have raised a child. It is good to have a National day to honor mothers for the hard work they do and the valuable role they play in the home. Mom is the emotional hub of the family. She is the glue that holds things together and makes sure the family stays a family. Christians should hold in high esteem the ministry of motherhood. The stay-at-home Mom is often downplayed as an antiquated idea. I heard about some college boys who were talking about looking for a wife. One commented that the question is no longer “Can she cook?” but “Will she cook?” Being Mom, loving a husband and raising godly children used to be enough, but today’s young woman says she wants more. You don’t see Home Economics classes taught in high schools anymore. Ever since the ERA amendment in 1972 to ban discrimination based on sex, women have wanted careers; they want equal income earning opportunities. We can trace the source back even further to war times when husbands being away in combat forced women to work outside the home to maintain commercial production. Things have changed and these changes are not all bad, but the end result has been a de-emphasis on the role of the Mom. Moms (and Dads) spend less time instilling sound morals in their children. They rely on school teachers, counselors, soccer coaches, media and day cares to raise their kids. Without parents at home to be in charge of the household, the kids take charge, and home-life deteriorates. Adam admired Eve, “because she would become the mother of all the living.” Genesis 3:20. There’s nothing wrong with being just a Mom. Bringing children into the world and raising them in a godly way is a worthy goal for any woman. “He settles the barren woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the LORD.” Psalm 113:9. We all have Moms. Let yours know she is appreciated.
