“How lovely are Your dwelling places, O LORD of hosts!” (Psalm 84:1). The dwelling, or the house, of the Lord was considered by the psalmists to be lovely. What did he mean by it being lovely? During the time this psalm was written the temple had not been built. The Lord was worshipped in large tents which marked off the outer courts, the Holy Place and the Most Holy Place. Were the sons of Korah referring to how beautiful these tents were? The next verse says, “My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD;” It was not the location, nor the physical beauty of the location that attracted the psalmists. It was the pleasure and the satisfaction of fulfilling the purpose of worshipping God. God created you. He made you for a purpose and placed you here on this earth. When you worship God, you are fulfilling the purpose you were created for. Worshipping God is lovely; it is amiable. The reason so many in the world feel frustrated and unfulfilled is they are not doing what they were created for. Many a pair of pliers have been broken being used for a hammer. Why? Because that’s not what pliers were created for. Screwdrivers get ruined using them as pry bars or to clean cracks in the sidewalk. (Been there, done that.) Why? Because that is not what screwdrivers were created for. Screwdrivers were created to drive screws, just as you were created to worship God. “How blessed is the man whose strength is in You, In whose heart are the highways to Zion!” Where do you find your strength? Where is your heart leading you? Many songs talk about following your heart. Anytime your heart is leading you away from your purpose of worshipping and pleasing our Heavenly Father, it is time for a change of heart. Set your heart on worshipping the Lord. Worship will become lovely for you. You will realize this is what you were made for.
