When German designer Karl Lagerfeld died in 2019, he left an inheritance of £1,500,000 ($2,021,340.00) to his cat. That’s right. His cat. (Seven years later, the cat has supposedly still not received any of the money.) What does the Bible have to say about pets inheriting money? Psalm 25:12-13 says, “Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land.” Proverbs 19:14 says, “House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD.” The Bible talks about leaving money to children or other people but not to pets. This may sound like I’m not a cat or a dog lover. I like animals but when an individual places pets above people in their lives, something is just not right about that. It is understandable to have doubts about the people we leave an inheritance to, whether it will be a blessing or a curse in their lives. “An inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning Will not be blessed in the end.” Proverbs 20:21. “Thus I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, for I must leave it to the man who will come after me. And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the fruit of my labor for which I have labored by acting wisely under the sun. This too is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 2:18-19. Taking a young person who has not learned fiscal responsibility and making them instantly wealthy is often tragic. They go through the money quickly, having little to show for it and will feel worse about themselves in the end. Wealth is not appreciated until it is earned. Leaving an inheritance to pets is one of many things people do without seeking God’s wisdom. God’s wisdom is always better than man’s. Seek God’s wisdom.
