George was an ornery child. By the age of 10 he had devised a way to embezzle money from the government, money under his own father’s care. He was in prison by the age of 16. But at the age of 20 he was convicted of his lost condition and devoted his life to following Jesus. He preached the message of Christ, as he understood it, beginning with a small church in Teignmouth, England. When he found out his salary was raised by the renting of the church pews, he refused to accept it and vowed to trust God to meet his needs. While working with a denominational church in Bristol, England, two children were orphaned in the congregation. George saw to their care. Other orphans were brought to George and before he knew it, he was running an orphanage, a ministry he carried on for the next 60 years. Not once did he ask people for money. He voiced his needs only to God, yet during his life the U.S. equivalent of $7,500,000 was donated to the Ashley Down Orphanage he founded. George Mueller also started 117 schools and educated 120,000 children. He once explained, “At last I saw Christ as my Saviour. I believed in Him and gave myself to Him. The burden rolled from off me, and a great love for Christ filled my soul. That was more than fifty years ago. I loved Jesus Christ then, but I loved Him more the year after, and more the year after that, and more every year since.” I share George’s story with you to impress upon you that Jesus changes lives, which impacts other lives. Jesus gives life meaning. Jesus once observed, “for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matthew 6:21). You have something today that you treasure more than anything else. Think about it. You know what it is. If it is of this world it will perish. Why not lay up your treasures in heaven?
