It’s hard to overcome our feeling of unworthiness. What makes it hard is that it is true; we are so unworthy to be in God’s presence, to assemble with His family and worship Him. None of us deserves to be here. It is normal to feel this way. Look at the people in the Bible. Jeremiah was born in Anathoth, a small village 2½ miles northeast of Jerusalem. He was nothing special and yet at a young age Jeremiah was chosen to be God’s prophet. He thought he was unworthy and told God, “Alas, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, Because I am a youth.” Jeremiah 1:6. But God told him, “Do not say, 'I am a youth,' Because everywhere I send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak. Do not be afraid of them, For I am with you to deliver you,” 1:7-8. It is God that gives us our worth. He wants you here this morning because you are important to Him. God knows how you have acted. He knows your sins, but He offers new life and that is why we are here. The Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” 6:16. We are here asking for the ancient path, wanting to know where the good way is. The “rest for our souls” which God offers does not mean God makes life easy. Read the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah had a tough life. He did nothing but preach what God told Him and the Jews despised him for it. “Whenever I speak, I cry out violence and destruction. So the word of the Lord has brought me insult and reproach all day long.” 20:8. There is no promise that life gets easier when we follow God, but Christianity leads to purpose. God give us worth. Life has a meaning.
