The Lord’s church, the church of Christ, the one we read about in the New Testament, is not a business. Many have tried to make it into a business, run it like a business, but it is not a business. At least the church as Jesus intended from the beginning was never designed to be operated like it is some corporation or organization. Jesus’ church is not an organization, it’s an organism, a living/breathing body of people. Jesus’ church is a family. We are brothers and sisters with only one Father. The church has leadership as Jesus mandated. “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers,” Ephesians 4:11. But these leaders are not CEO’s. Leadership looks different in the church than it does in the world. Jesus, the greatest leader the world has ever known, did His leading with a wash basin and a towel washing the feet of His disciples. Godly leaders seek to imitate Jesus’ leadership style. “for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;” Ephesians 4:12. They first replicate the passion and tenderness of Christ in their own life with absolute unselfishness, then they help others receive the same. “until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” The end result is one body united under one faith spreading salvation to a lost and dying world. We don’t stop until every member is fully Christ-like. It’s not about a healthy profit margin or pleasing some investors. The church is people humbly and sincerely seeking to do the will of the Father. We please God, not man. If men are pleased with what we do, hooray! But that’s not the goal. Is God Almighty pleased with our church? Nothing else matters.
